Safety Plan for CUC3

The Safety Officer for the sector

Duties: To familiarise new Sector Members with the location of fire fighting equipment, alarm points, escape routes and assembly points, together with fire and emergency procedures.

First Aid Officer

Mrs. Sue Harding, secretary to the sector. phone (3)36377

Duties: In charge of First Aid Box, which will be regularly checked. Contact point for calling First Aider when required.

Computer Safety Officer

Dr. Catherine Pitt: computer officer to the sector, to be found in room 373, phone (3)63875 or (3)63071

Duties: to contact Chief Engineer in case of fire or water emergency or Custodian in case of security problems. In charge of computer risk assessments .

All supervisors

Duties: Any illness arising from the working environment should, in first instance, be reported to the person's supervisor who will arrange contact with either Occupational Health or and Emergency Doctor if necessary.

Computer Safety Review

Hazard Risk Action to reduce risk
Typing/mouse action RSI Follow the guidelines for working with Display Screen Equipment (DSE) at http://www-safety.ch.cam.ac.uk/computing/index.html. Be especially careful when typing on a laptop. All regular users of DSE should complete the DSE self-assessment checklist at http://www-safety.ch.cam.ac.uk/computing/DSE-RA.html (PDF or Word format). Avoid using laptops for long periods or large amounts of typing. If your keyboard/mouse/monitor are unsuitable inform the supervisor and computer officer. If your chair is unsuitable/cannot be adjusted inform the supervisor.
DSE use Eye strain Follow the guidelines for working with DSE at http://www-safety.ch.cam.ac.uk/computing/index.html. If your monitor is blurred then inform the computer officer and the supervisor.
Manual handling Back injuries Take care when lifting computers, especially monitors. Lift correctly. Ask for help with heavy items. Make use of Theory sector trolley (ask the computer officer) when moving machines. Follow the guidelines in the Department Safety Handbook.
Foot injuries Wear sensible shoes when moving machines, use trolley, ask for help with heavy items.
Installing rack-mounted equipment Cuts/bruises to fingers Take care when extracting/inserting cage nuts. Support equipment carefully when fastening into rack.
Working near large servers such as E10K Very noisy environment Wear ear defenders if spending any length of time near E10K. Inform colleagues so they can fetch you if fire alarm sounds.
Working inside computers Cuts to fingers Work in good light. Take extra care when cards have sharp edges.
