Academic Promotions

The General Board have announced two promotions to take place from October 1st 2005: Anthony Stone will be promoted to Professor, and Ali Alavi to Reader.

Corday-Morgan Medal

Stuart Althorpe has been awarded the RSC's 2004 Corday-Morgan Medal and Prize.

New appointment

Dr Stuart Althorpe has been appointed to a University lectureship in theoretical chemistry.

Academic Promotions

Michiel Sprik has been awarded a personal chair. David Wales has been promoted to Reader.

Liquid Matter prize

Professor Jean-Pierre Hansen is to be awarded the first Liquid Matter Prize of the European Physical Society. This prize was created in 2002 by the EPS to honour outstanding achievements in this field of research.

Doctor of Science

Dr David Wales has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Science by the University of Cambridge.

Proteins Workshop

Jonathan Doye, Ard Louis and Michele Vendruscolo along with Richard Sear (University of Surrey) are organising a workshop entitled Protein Interactions in vitro and in vivo in Cambridge from the 21st to 23rd June 2004 as part of the Statistical Mechanics of Molecular and Cellular Biological Systems programme at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

Conference in honour of Professor Handy

Molecular Quantum Mechanics: The No Nonsense Path to Progress will be held at St. John's College in the University of Cambridge from 24th to 29th July 2004. The conference is held in honour of Nick Handy of CUC³.

New visitors

Professor Hartmut Löwen will be visiting the centre during September.

Kramers Lectures

Jean-Pierre Hansen has been invited to deliver the Kramers lectures at the University of Utrecht during the period from October to December 2003.

Visitor to the centre

Professor Mike Klein of the University of Pennsylvania will be visiting the centre in April and May.

Prize awarded to CUC³ student

Rosalind Allen, a third year PhD student in Jean-Pierre Hansen's group, was awarded the Christopher Wormald Prize on the occasion of the Thermodynamics 2003 Conference held in Cambridge, April 9-11th, 2003. Rosalind was invited to deliver a Plenary Lecture at the at Conference on "Intermittent Permeation of Cylindrical Nanopores by Water".

New book published

"Basic Concepts for Simple and Complex Fluids" the latest book by J.L. Barrat and Jean-Pierre Hansen, was published by CUP in March 2003.

Thermodynamics Conference

Ard Louis is organising the Thermodynamics 2003 Conference along with Martin Trusler (Imperial College) and Geoff Maitland (Schlumberger Cambridge Research), to be held in Cambridge from the 9th to the 11th April 2003. Jean-Pierre Hansen will be delivering the RSC Lennard-Jones Lecture at the conference.

Symposium in honour of Prof Nick Handy
