Arrangements for visitors

Long term visitors

Visitors who stay for more than six months will be treated as ordinary members of staff: Sue needs to know all details two months in advance. This should include arrival and departure dates, which must be precise. If exact dates aren't known then please give the earliest possible arrival date and the latest leaving date.

Short term visitors

Visitors who stay for less than six months: Please contact Sue at least a week in advance with precise dates so that desks can be assigned. If exact dates aren't known then give the earliest probable start and latest probable end date. It is not always possible to find a spare desk at short notice.

All visitors

The computer officers need to know the following information for each visitor: their full name, sex, title, date of birth, any College affiliation and any previous Cambridge user identifier. This is used to set up computer accounts and is required for anyone who wants to use local computer facilities other than the open access wireless network. Please either send the information by email or the host can fill in the form at http://www-co.ch.cam.ac.uk/cgi-bin/jackdaw-pre-reg.cgi.

We can provide the following for visitors in the theory sector:

  • Basic Linux desktop computer. This is not backed up and the hard drive will be wiped when the visitor leaves. The machine will be capable of web browsing and reading email, but may not be up to serious computation.
  • Open access wireless network for wireless-enabled laptops. This is provided by a commercial ISP and is a separate network from the academic wired and wireless networks.

If asked in advance, we can also provide:

  • Accounts on local clusters/bastion host/PWF/University mail system/Raven. Please let the computer officers know at least a week in advance which accounts are needed.
  • Wired network connection. This requires a Raven account (see above) and we also need to know what socket number in which room to make live. When the visitor arrives and has their Raven password they can then just plug in and follow the instructions.
