The workstations and the majority of the compute servers within the Theory
sector only accept incoming connections from machines on the Chemistry network.
This is a necessary security precaution. It does mean that you cannot log
into these machines directly from home or other universities.
The usual way round this is to use the machine
chimaera.ch.cam.ac.uk, which does accept ssh connections. You can then ssh
into chimaera and on to the other machines from there. There is some basic documentation
on the use of ssh. You can also get more complicated and set up port forwarding to make copying
files between machines a one-stage process.
People doing remote
visualisation work may be interested in using VNC to increase the performance of the
connection.
If you are in the Theory sector you almost certainly have a chimaera
account already- log in with your AD username and password. If not, mail the computer officers at support@ch.cam.ac.uk to
get an AD account or to get put into the group that can access chimaera.
Another thing that people often want to do from home networks is to browse
electronic journals on the web. A lot of these are restricted to access
from the Cambridge network only, so if you are using a cable-modem or a
dialup service other than Magpie you cannot
access these sites. A good way to do this is to use the Department's VPN service, which
makes your home machine appear to be part of the Chemistry network once you
have logged into the VPN server.
