Personal machines
The computer office runs an open access wireless network
in CUC3, amongst other places. Any machine can use it, and this is much the best way to get
your laptop connected to the network.
It is sometimes, but not always, possible to connect personal laptops to the wired department network. The most common reason for not being able to connect a laptop is that it is running an operating system that is not permitted under the local network rules. There is a list of banned operating systems. Please note that this list currently includes Windows XP Home Edition.
To get a laptop connected to the wired network you need to fill out the online application
form. Be warned that if you click on this link from outside the local
network you will have to supply a Raven password to get
access to the form.
The sector backup system cannot back up laptops, as they are rarely on the
network at the time of the day the backup runs.
Sector laptops
The sector has a couple of dual-boot laptops which may be borrowed from
room 373 for presentations, conferences, running Windows-only software,
etc.
